     1. Gun / Ammunition

One of the most important items to have for gun deer season is your gun. There are various calibers of rifles out there, such as the .30-06, .270, .300, .308, and 7mm. These gun calibers are perfect for big game and especially whitetail hunting. There are also various brands of ammunition companies that tailor to your caliber of gun. Be sure to pick the right ammunition for the specific caliber of gun you are using.

     2. Orange Clothing

Be seen by other hunters! This is the busiest time to be in the deer woods. In Wisconsin alone, there are 600,000 hunters for opening weekend. This means being seen in the woods especially when hunting public land is very essential. By law (varies in each state) it requires the hunter to have 50% or more blaze Orange or Blaze Pink on you while you hunt. Picking warm, comfortable, and quiet clothing will be essential to staying in the woods all day long and having an enjoyable and safe hunting experience.

     3. Proper Footwear

With anything, proper footwear is essential. In the deer woods you are navigating through various terrain. You should pick out a pair of boots that are warm (600 or more grams), comfortable, scent free (not required but helps), and most defiantly waterproof. Dive into brands such as Irish Setter, Muddy, Rocky, and Lacrosse. All great brands that will last you a lifetime.

     4. Deer Calls

Gun deer season usually falls during the peak of the whitetail rut. This means calling deer can be a huge tool for you in being successful in the deer woods. The most common deer calls are the grunt tube and rattling antlers. Both are super beneficial during the rut. These calls can run between 10 and 20 dollars. 

     5. Knife

A knife is not only a great tool to have in the woods, but is super essential in taking care of your game after you harvest it. Pick a knife that fits in your hands well, packs away nicely, and is very sharp. A good knife can last you a lifetime!

     6. Deer Drag

If you do not have access to or cannot get to your harvest with an ATV or your Truck, a deer drag will save you time and energy when dragging out your game. there are a variety of deer drags, some that have wheels and some that are harness style connected to a rope. Depending on how much you want to spend, the price on the product usually affects the amount of energy and time it will take t0 get your game out of  the woods.

     7. Headlamp

This one is short and sweet. Headlamps are crucial to any and every hunter. Be sure to pick up one, because it surely does help when you are walking or leaving your stand, or when you are tracking or dragging out your game.

     8. Tree Stand or Ground Blind

Now, purchasing a tree stand and or a ground blind is not a must, it may help you be successful when out in the field. Both tree stands and ground blinds have their pros and cons, but work well in the field for you. Blinds and tree stands may range between 50 to 500 dollars.

     9.  Hunting License

One of the last things on our list; but should be one of your first purchases would be your hunting license. For what ever state you are hunting, be sure that you have the proper permits and tags to accommodate your particular hunt.

Blaze Pink Hunters

Blaze Pink Clothing Bill Introduced in WI

There could be a new color in the woods this deer hunting season and it may look more like a teenage girls’ closet than the traditional blaze orange that you’re used to seeing. Wisconsin lawmakers have introduced a bill that would allow “blaze pink” to be a legal color for gun hunters to wear if accepted.

If the bill passes, Wisconsin will be the first state in the U.S.A. that will allow hunters to wear blaze pink instead of the traditional blaze orange. The bill was introduced by state representatives Joel Kleefisch (R-Oconomowoc) and Nick Milroy (D-South Range) in the hopes of encouraging young women to hunt and join in the state tradition.

“Wisconsin has historically had some of the highest participation rates in hunting, and we’ve seen a decrease in this number in recent years,” Milroy said. “It’s my hope that this will become universally acceptable and create revenue for some of these programs that we’re talking about.

Hunting is becoming more popular amongst women with hunting celebrities paving the way such as the immensely popular Eva Shockey and Tiffany Lakosky and the bill theoretically will appeal to more young women. Others may get a kick out of the new color as well and we’re sure that hunting camps all over the state will have one unlucky hunter lose a bet and have to wear some “blaze pink” on opening day.

According to a UW Madison professor and textile expert, Majid Sarmadia, fluorescent pink has similar or better visibility to humans as blaze orange. This means that it’d be safe to wear just like blaze orange.

Majid Sarmadi, a University of Wisconsin-Madison professor and textile expert, said his lab analysis of fluorescent pink proved it had similar or better visibility to humans as blaze orange, and therefore would be just as safe for hunters to wear.

 

While I can assure you that I will not be donning any Blaze Pink hunting clothing this year, I will say that if it helps out the sport, then that’s great. We’ll have to wait and see how this plays out, but maybe you’ll see some blaze pink MorningMoss shirts out in the future.

Leadership Responsibility

The purpose of this paper is to explore how characteristics of complex educational change
may virtually dictate the leadership strategies adopted by those charged with central
responsibility for bringing it about. The change in question is large scale reorganisation of
schooling across entire English local education authorities (LEAs – equivalent to large districts
in the USA), subject of recently completed research. The challenge of leading major LEA
reorganisation initiatives falls primarily to LEA chief education officers (CEOs – equivalent to
school district superintendents) and their colleague officials, the professional staff who carry
out the executive tasks of local government.

The English education system consists of three administrative levels. The pattern of
governance for most publicly funded schools determines the involvement of stakeholders at
each level in reorganisation of local schooling:

• central government – ministers from the elected majority political party regulate the nature,
overall resourcing and governance of the national system of schooling. They can employ
legislation and resource incentives or penalties to persuade LEAs to remove surplus student
places in their schools;

• local government – elected councillors in the majority political party in each locality are
responsible for local taxation which part-funds schooling, and for their LEA. They have a
duty to regulate the supply of student places which includes taking reorganisation initiatives
if deemed necessary;

• school – elected or co-opted members of the governing body for each school represent
parents, the local community, the LEA and school staff. (Governing bodies approximate to
school boards in the USA but there is a separate governing body for each school and australianwriting).  Governors’ responsibilities include appointing staff within an annual budget covering their salaries, set by the LEA according to central government parameters. Headteachers (principals) attend governors’ meetings and may decide whether to accept governor status and so entitlement to vote on governing body decisions. They are responsible for school leadership within the oversight of the governing body.

Whitetail deer hunting has become a big deal in the United States and across North America. There are more people hunting now than ever before and the industry is booming. While hunting has increased, the ability to get public access has decreased. More and more hunters are pitted against each other with differing perspectives. The question remains, what are people really hunting for? Game of Inches produced by Rockhouse Motion looks at stories of hunters who give their perspective on the sport.
